FREE MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING
FOR PEOPLE AGE 50+

What Is The Training?

Southern Cross University is looking for 20 people to participate in a 12 week martial arts programme. As a participant, you will gain access to two weekly classes that will last approximately an hour. In these classes, you will be practicing 'hard martial arts' which will involve striking and drilling in the arts of Muay Thai, Tae Kwon Do and Wushu. The training will be free provided that you meet certain eligibility criteria.

What Do I Get Out Of It?

So what exactly are you signing up for? You'll get access to an advanced training facility twice a week, and high quality training from a world champion martial artist, absolutely free! There will also be complimentary refreshments after each session, and an opportunity for you to socialise with other participants and the trainer.

Am I Eligible?

To participate in this training, you will need to meet certain criteria and agree to certain conditions. This training is being conducted as part of a study researching the effects of hard martial arts training on older adults. To be eligible you must:

  • Be over the age of 50

  • Have little to no experience in martial arts

  • Not be a high level athlete

  • Be in relatively good health

  • Have a health declaration form signed by your GP before training

  • Be willing to answer questions before, during and after the programme related to your training​

When

Training commences on August 13, 2024. Sessions will run every Tuesday & Thursday at 1:30 PM for 1 hour. The programme will run for 12 consecutive weeks.

Where

Sessions will be conducted at Ascend Martial Arts.

Ascend is located at 7/23 Corporation Circuit, Tweed Heads South

What Do I Need?

Most equipment will be supplied for you. You will need to bring your own water bottle and towel to each session.

What Do I Need To Do?

You'll be required to answer questions from researchers at Southern Cross University about your training experience before, during and after the programme.

If selected to participate in the programme, you will also be required to have a medical clearance form signed by your GP.
