Learning Muay Thai at Ascend Martial Arts

Muay Thai, sometimes called the art of eight limbs, is the national martial art of Thailand. Muay Thai is currently one of the most popular striking martial arts on the planet due to its high efficacy in self defence and combat, as well as its high intensity nature which makes it great for getting fit and losing weight. But what actually happens in a Muay Thai class? Many people may have fears that they're going to get hit or beat up, but that's just not the case. Read on to find out what happens in the average Muay Thai class at Ascend Martial arts.

You're Not Going to Get Hit

The number one concern that most people have when starting Muay Thai is that they fear that their training partner is going to hit them or beat them up. Whilst I can't speak for every gym, most gyms, including Ascend Martial Arts, aren't going to have you hitting each other to learn strikes. Most of the time you'll actually be hitting and holding Thai Pads for each other.

Thai Pads (see photo above) are big rectangular pads that allow your partner to practice strikes on a moving target without actually hitting you. This means that you're still going to get the feel of striking a real opponent, but no one ever needs to get hurt.

In the regular Muay Thai Classes at Ascend, you may occasionally do drills which require both people to put gloves on, however you still won't be hitting each other. Rather, you'll likely be practicing clinching (Muay Thai Grappling), head movement or other defensive drills.

At Ascend Martial Arts, we have separate classes to cater for those who want to spar or to compete, so rest assured that your safety will be upheld 100% of the time in our Muay Thai classes.

Muay Thai is Your All-In-One Fitness Solution

People often believe that you need to be fit and strong BEFORE you start a martial art like Muay Thai, when in fact training in a Muay Thai class is one of the best ways to develop your strength and fitness.

Muay Thai is a very accessible martial art and easy to get started in, but the hardest part is usually convincing yourself to give it a try. Whilst it can be confronting to jump into learning a brand new skill, especially if you aren't happy with your current level of fitness and strength, you will quickly find that training in Muay Thai is not only a great way to get a work out and get fit, it's also a lot of fun as well!

Furthermore, Muay Thai classes at Ascend can help you stay motivated to reaching your fitness goals by placing you in a supportive environment full of other individuals on the same self development journey as you.

The most important thing for you to know about Muay Thai classes at Ascend Martial Arts, is that they're for everyone. At Ascend, we believe that everyone should learn martial arts, so we put a heavy emphasis on creating a supportive and equal environment where everyone can feel safe and respected.

When you start training, you may think that you're holding others back and irritating them because you don't share the same skill level, but that isn't the case. At Ascend, we encourage our members to be just as passionate about helping others as they are about learning. Helping others not only helps you to refine and improve your own understanding of martial arts; it also builds character, integrity and confidence in your own ability.

We take a hard stance on inclusivity at Ascend Martial Arts, so you can be assured that you'll be treated with respect from day one.
